Cyclization of iodides of diastereomeric 1-(1-aryl-1-hydroxyethyl)-2-(1-trimethylammonioethyl)benzenes, derived from (S)-1-phenylethanamine, proceeds diastereospecifically to afford (1S,3R)- and (1R,3R)-1-aryl-1,3-dimethyl-1,3-dihydroisobenzofurans, the potent antidepressants. |
