Modern Methods of Structure Elucidation (MMSE)

Modern Methods of Structure Elucidation (MMSE) is the annual national training site on modern spectroscopic analytical techniques intended for Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. Students, Post-docs and Young Researchers from the Universities, as well as Researchers/Spectroscopists from the Industrial Laboratories across the country. This event is organized by the Centro de Química Estrutural – Instituto Superior Técnico – Universidade de Lisboa (CQE–IST), in collaboration with the IST/ITN – Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear – Instituto Superior Técnico – Universidade de Lisboa.

The main purpose of the MMSE is to provide an overview of modern spectroscopic techniques for structure elucidation (Solution and Solid-state NMR spectroscopy, EPR spectroscopy, Mass-Spectrometry and X-ray diffraction) of complex organic and inorganic compounds.

This school includes theoretical sessions provided by recognized specialists in the field, discussions in small groups (dedicated to training on structure elucidation), practical sessions and demonstrations of the equipment. A flash presentation session of the participants and the social program are also scheduled.

After the tremendous success of the early editions of this event (2008–2013) that counted with more than 250 participants from 12 Portuguese Universities, we have extended the range of analytical techniques (five most important techniques are currently presented) and, provided the possibility to all participants to get hands-on training with equipments. Furthermore, all participants of the MMSE school are invited to present their scientific results during the flash presentation session. We also edit a Book of Abstracts containing materials of the current edition of the MMSE site.

All mentioned above allows us to define the MMSE as the national scientific meeting.

In 2020, due to Covid-19 pandemic, MMSE-2020 will be re-invented into a virtual edition.
