The main scientific interest of José Armando L. da Silva is the Bioinorganic Chemistry.

The cases of the toadstoal Amanita muscaria (amavadine) and the haloperoxidases of brown Algae have been analysed. The achievements allowed a better knowledge of vanadium functions in biology and had contributed for technological applications. Studies on functionalization of alkanes and other hydrocarbons using models of biological systems as catalysts, including vanadium complexes, have been developed. Research on prebiotic chemistry concerning the previous period of the "RNA world" has been initiated recently.

Was invited teacher to post-graduation level in "Universidade Estadual de Maringá" (Brazil) on Bioinorganic Chemistry (1999/2000 and 2000/2001).
