Abstract Syntheses and structures of heterometallic M (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn or W)-tin(II/IV) systems derived from compartmental Schiff bases (salen type) are reviewed. Majority of such compounds were prepared following the metalloligand strategy while recent studies revealed that they can be prepared by self-assembly approach. Traditional approaches, for example, inert atmosphere (under N-2) synthesis resulted mainly addition products while varieties of compounds including multi-components systems such as salts, cocrystals and salt cocrystals were isolated in unfamiliar open atmosphere synthesis. Structural diversity was predominantly observed in latter cases and several noncovalent interactions (O-H center dot center dot center dot O/ O-H center dot center dot center dot Cl/ O-H center dot center dot center dot Br/ N-H center dot center dot center dot O/ N-H center dot center dot center dot Cl/M center dot center dot center dot O/ M center dot center dot center dot Cl/ Sn center dot center dot center dot M/ M center dot center dot center dot pi/ pi center dot center dot center dot pi/ halogen or tetrel bonding) play crucial roles in their solid-state stabilization. Their future prospects in catalysis and biology are also discussed. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
