Sofia Gama graduated from Instituto Superior Técnico in Chemical Engineering in 2001 and earned her PhD from the same institution in 2008 under the supervision of Prof. M. Amelia Santos with the co-supervision of Prof. João Pessoa. After a post-doctoral research at the actual Centro de Ciências Tecnológicas e Nucleares (Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear at that time) in the group of Dr. Isabel Santos (2008/2014) she moved abroad, first in Germany (Friedrich Schiller University Jena, 2014/2018), then in France (Université de Bourgogne, in Dijon (2018/2020) and finally Poland (University of Bialystok, 2020/2022) where she was appointed as Assistant Researcher.

She dedicated her career to the study of metal complexes, with her more recent research being dedicated to the understanding of metal homeostasis in different living organisms and studying the metal complexation ability of different natural compounds.
