Abstract Langmuir films of [C(18)mim][NTf2] ionic liquid exhibited, for the first time, the reversible formation of crystalline-like structures at the surface of water, compatible with the formation of multilayers. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulation results support the experimental findings, unambiguously indicating the existence of a trilayer.
